Director still reports
to Native American task force: Nugent

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- The employment status of the executive director of the
United Methodist Native American Comprehensive Plan (NACP) will not interfere
with the influence of the plan's task force, according to the Rev. Randolph
Nugent.
Nugent, general secretary of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries,
was responding to recent criticism from the task force that Anne Saunkeah and
her administrative assistant are now considered board staff and the suggestion
that the task force be given full control over designated funds.
In a Nov. 13 interview, Nugent explained the 1996 General Conference had
given the Board of Global Ministries the responsibility of general oversight
of the Native American Comprehensive Plan "and we are carrying that out
faithfully."
By placing Saunkeah and her assistant on staff, the board was able to
underwrite some of the salary and benefit costs, he said, along with any
board-related travel expenses.
The board purchased a computer for the plan's office in Tulsa, Okla., and
arranged for delivery and installation. It also will underwrite the cost of
leasing copy equipment.
Nugent said the board is not directing Saunkeah's work, however. "Her work is
designed by the comprehensive plan committee," he added.
