Zimbabwean Rukudzo Murapa
named to head Africa University

by United Methodist News Service

Rukudzo Murapa, a Zimbabwean and an advisor with the United Nations, has been
named to head United Methodist-related Africa University effective March 1998.
Africa University, located in Mutare, Zimbabwe, began in 1992 with 40
students from 11 countries studying theology or agriculture.
Murapa succeeds the Rev. John W.Z. Kurewa, who is retiring at the end of the
year. His official title is vice chancellor, comparable to the president of a
U. S. college or university. The position of chancellor is held by United
Methodist Bishop Emilio deCarvalho of Angola who also serves as chairman of
the university’s board of directors.
Murapa was selected during the Nov. 10-12 meeting of the university’s board
of directors. Athanasius Mphuru, dean of the faculty of agriculture and
natural resources, was named acting vice chancellor from January to March.
Accepting the appointment, Murapa noted that an "excellent" foundation
already has been laid at Africa University. He pledged to work with the board,
staff and students to continue building the institution.
"We are delighted to have a person of Professor Murapa’s stature to lead,
nurture and continue the development of Africa University," deCarvalho said.
Murapa, inter-regional advisor with the United Nations’ Department of
Development, Support and Management Services, is not new to Africa University.
He chaired the international planning committee that guided the development of
the university’s faculty of management and administration in 1994.
He possesses a masters of public administration degree, a doctorate in public
administration, comparative politics and economics, and a graduate certificate
in African economic and political development. He began his professional
career in academia and has since contributed to Africa’s development through
his work with multilateral institutions such as the United Nations and the
World Bank; bilateral agencies such as USAID and other governmental
organizations.
Murapa "will bring enormous gifts and considerable experience to the post of
vice chancellor in this second chapter of the development of Africa
University," said the Rev. Roger Ireson, top executive of the United Methodist
Board of Higher Education and Ministry. "He is the appropriate person to lead
Africa University into the 21st Century."
Today the school has an enrollment of more than 600 students and offers
degrees in four areas: agriculture & natural resources; education; management
& administration; and theology. The university plans to launch its fifth
faculty, Humanities & Social Sciences, in 1998.
