Tim Tanton named news editor
for United Methodist News Service

	NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Tim Tanton, business editor of the Nashville
Banner, has been named news editor for United Methodist News Service, the
denomination’s official news agency headquartered here. 
	Tanton, an active United Methodist, will succeed the Rev. Ralph E. Baker who
retires Nov. 30 with 45 years of service to the church.  Baker has been copy
editor and writer for the News Service since 1995 and was previously editor of
Interpreter, program journal of the denomination.
	Tanton joined the Banner staff in 1989 and was named business editor in 1993.
Previously worked at The Jackson Sun, Jackson, Tenn.;  The Rockwood Times,
Rockwood, Tenn.; and the Roane County News, Kingston, Tenn. He also was
co-publisher and co-editor of IKON, a satirical magazine published in
Knoxville, Tenn.
	Tanton earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville in 1983.
A series of articles on health care reform won him a 1992 award from the
Tennessee Associated Press Managing Editors and a 1991 Nashville Banner
Publisher’s Award. In 1984 he received first place award for editorials in a
weekly newspaper from the Tennessee Press Association.
Tanton is a member of East End United Methodist Church in Nashville, where he
serves as chairman of the finance committee and a former member of the board
of trustees.  He is also a member of the board of directors for the Nashville
Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
United Methodist News Service, a unit of United Methodist Communications, also
has offices in New York and Washington. It does not produce a news publication
itself, but provides services to both church and public news media. It
distributes more than 600 full-length releases annually, photographs, features
and commentaries, weekly news summaries, and monthly news summaries for
Spanish and Korean language news outlets. Stories also are available through
various Internet services including the United Methodist homepage.
Director of the News Service, with offices in Nashville, is Thomas S.
McAnally.  News directors in the agency’s three offices are: Nashville --
Linda Green; New York -- Linda Bloom; and Washington -- Joretta Purdue.
