The Anglican Diocese of Cape Town is to establish a Diocesan Year of
Jubilee Fund for the eradication of poverty. This follows a decision
taken today at its Synod in Cape Town.

Earlier, the Archbishop of Cape Town, the Most Revd Njongonkulu
Ndungane, had urged that practical steps be taken in the country to
eradicate poverty. He suggested to the Diocese that it could that by
committing itself to a campaign by families going without one meal a
week until the year 2000, and by setting the cost of that meal aside for
contribution to a special fund which would engage in work aimed at the
eradication of poverty.

During his charge, he made it clear that such work not simply be the
task of feeding the poor, but would also involve education and training.
