New Team of Presbyterian Women Leaders Gathers
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With new people in most of its top leadership positions,
the Churchwide Coordinating Team (CCT) of Presbyterian Women met here Oct.
23-28. The new 30-member team will serve until the 2000 triennial
Churchwide Gathering of Presbyterian Women.
CCT moderator is Diana Lim of San Jose, Calif. Other new leaders
greeted by the team were Jane Parker Huber, interim coordinator for
Presbyterian Women; Barbara E. Dua, the new associate director for women's
ministries in the National Ministries Division; and Marie T. Cross, the new
editor of "HORIZONS" magazine.
The group chose the Middle East, Ethiopia and the United States as the
destinations for its 1997-2000 Global Exchange program. The Middle East
and Ethiopia were chosen, team members said, in support of the "Year with
Education" emphasis of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and because of the
long history of mission service -- particularly educational ministries --
in the regions. The United States was chosen as the third site in order to
connect issues in the Middle East and Ethiopia with similar issues in this
country.
In other actions, the CCT voted to
* reaffirm its support of the PC(USA)'s "Commitment to Peacemaking"
* appeal to President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeline Albright
to increase food aid to North Korea
* urge President Clinton to endorse the Ottawa Initiative for a total
worldwide ban on land mines
* request Stated Clerk the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick to highlight the
conclusion of the Ecumenical Decade: Churches in Solidarity with
Women at the Ecumenical Worship Service of the 210th General
Assembly (1998) next June in Charlotte, N.C.
* ask Presbyterian Women throughout the church to assist in the
building of the national Network of Presbyterian College Women
* urge Presbyterians to sign petitions calling for a halt to sweatshop
abuses as part of the "Holiday Season of Conscience"
* call upon Presbyterians to write to members of Congress urging
support of the Violence against Women Prevention Act of 1997.
The next meeting of the CCT will be Feb. 27-March 6 at Plaza Resolana
in Santa Fe, N.M.
