University Senate approves academic institutions
for continued United Methodist relationship

by United Methodist News Service

The United Methodist body charged which determining which educational
institutions and theological schools are affiliated with the church reaffirmed
seven colleges and universities during its Jan 8-9 meeting here.
The University Senate, a group of 25 academic professionals, establishes the
criteria that must be met by schools, colleges, universities and theological
schools to achieve and retain listing as institutions affiliated with the
United Methodist Church.
Another objective of the senate is to provide a review process to ensure that
academic and theological institutions affiliated with the church or seeking a
listing have institutional integrity, well-structured programs, sound
management and clearly defined church relationships.
During its meeting here, the senators unanimously continued listing of six
academic institutions: American University, Washington; Brevard (N.C.)
College,; Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, S.D.; Emory & Henry College,
Emory, Va.; Kansas Wesleyan University, Salina, Kan.; and Otterbein College,
Westerville, Ohio.
The senate also continued affiliation for Louisburg (N.C.) College but gave
it a public warning. The two-year college will be monitored by the University
Senate as it addresses institutional needs.
In other actions, senators affirmed a commitment to work with United
Methodist-related educational institutions and the church in strengthening
their missional partnerships.
The president of the University Senate is the Rev. Dennis Campbell,
headmaster of Woodberry Forest School, a boys' college preparatory school in
Madison County, Va.
