Next World Methodist Conference
to meet in England in 2001

by United Methodist News Service

The World Methodist Council has announced that the next World Methodist
Conference and Council meetings will be held in Brighton, on the southern
coast of England, July 24-31, 2001.
Frances Alguire, New Buffalo, Mich., chairperson of the council's executive
committee, said it is appropriate that at the start of a new millennium world
Methodists should return to their roots. The Methodist movement was launched
by Church of England clergyman John Wesley in the 18th Century.
The World Methodist Council represents nearly 34 million Methodists from 108
countries. It sponsors a worldwide conference every five years, the most
recent being in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. The last conference in England was in
1966 in London.
Between 3,000 and 4,000 delegates are expected at the 2001 event, according
to the Rev. Joe Hale, Lake Junaluska, N.C., the council's general secretary.
"Historic Brighton is a fascinating place, perhaps best known for its famous
Royal Pavilion," he said. "It and Hove, connecting cities along the sea,
will be able to easily house all the delegates in their fine hotels and guest
houses.
"Between the Brighton Center, where the conference will be held, and the
Royal Pavilion are famous lanes with interesting shops and boutiques. Above
all, the warm welcome extended by British Methodists will ensure a great
conference."
Planning for the conference is in the hands of an international committee
headed by the Rev. Hal Brady, senior pastor of St. Luke United Methodist
Church, Columbus, Ga. Brady was pastor of First United Methodist Church in
Dallas for 10 years before is appointment to Columbus. A host committee will
be formed in England to make local arrangements.
