Music director sought
for 2000 General Conference

	EVANSTON, Ill. (UMNS) -– Applications are being received for the position of
director of music of the United Methodist General Conference in Cleveland May
2-12, 2000.
Resumes, including audio and video tapes, may be sent to the Rev. James M.
Perry, 122 West Franklin Ave., Suite 400, Minneapolis, MN 55404.  Deadline is
April 30, 1998.  
Perry, vice president for program of the Commission on the General Conference,
said a selection is expected at the group's next meeting May 29-31 in
Philadelphia.
	The quadrennial legislative body of the denomination includes 1,000 delegates
from around the world and attracts several thousand visitors.  Mollie Stewart
of Valhermosa Springs, Ala., is chairperson of the 17-member commission
planning the event. 
The director of music is a volunteer position but living expenses at the
conference are reimbursed as well as certain other expenses related to the
fulfillment of the job.
The director will be responsible for:
* auditioning, selecting and coordinating the use of visiting choral groups at
the opening communion service, morning worship services and afternoon
preaching services;
* selecting the conference organist and supervising his/her work;
	* selecting and coordinating the use of musical ensembles, if such are
required;
* recommending to the conference business manager the rental of instruments
such as organs and pianos, and payment to professional musicians if required;
	* providing leadership for congregational singing at worship and business
sessions;
	* editing and supervising the printed orders of worship, including the
opening communion service;
* attending the entire conference.
	The work of the director of music is directed by the program committee and
the conference business manager, Gary Bowen.
