Downed branches, trees in Northeast
require work teams, bishop says

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Although the emergency is over, residents in the Northeast
affected by a long, paralyzing January ice storm need continued assistance,
according to
United Methodist Bishop Susan Morrison of Albany, N.Y.
Morrison, who recently toured areas of upper New York State, noted that her
episcopal area had responded to the crisis in New York and Vermont with the
distribution of generators, kerosene heaters, batteries, blankets and food.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) helped coordinate the
assistance.
Now, she said, work teams are needed "just to clear the branches and trees
that are all over the place."
Residents also are concerned about having to deal with frozen pipes and roof
repairs. "There isn't a person I talked to who doesn't have leaks in their
roof," Morrison added.
People also are needed to help residents fill out applications and complete
the process necessary to receive financial assistance from the government.
"The folk up there are fairly independent and have never felt comfortable
working with the government," she said.
Morrison noted there is a large elderly population in the affected region who
particularly need help.
Donations designated for "Northeast Winter Storm" can be made through UMCOR's
Domestic Disaster Response No. 901670-1 and sent to local churches or
directly to UMCOR at 475 Riverside Dr., Room 330, New York, NY 10115.
Individuals wishing to volunteer for work may call the bishop's office:
(518)-426-0386.
