Dallas church jazz band to take music to
Russia to benefit children's hospital

by United Methodist News Service

The jazz band of Dallas' Lovers Lane United Methodist Church will use both
music and muscle to improve the living conditions of a children's cancer
hospital in Russia this summer.
The 31-member band will travel to Volgograd, formerly known as Stalingrad,
May 28-June 9 to hammer, paint and sweep by day and perform in concerts
throughout the city at night. The band will also participate in a jazz
festival in Moscow. Band members will take with them a cache of medical
supplies donated by the Baylor Health Care System.
Formed in 1992, the Lovers Lane United Methodist Church Jazz Band has played
for worship services, charity benefits, fund-raising campaigns and even the
state's maximum security prison. The band was introduced to the larger United
Methodist connection when it performed for the 1996 General Conference in
Denver.
In an effort to raise the necessary $80,000 needed for the Russian trip, the
band is performing in concerts and events across Texas. Members are seeking
corporate sponsors and have scheduled a dance at the church on Valentine's
Day.
Businesses or individuals who want to assist with the project may contact
David McLaurin, director of outreach at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church:
(214) 691-4721.
