National conference will discuss agreement, implementation guidelines

S O LEOPOLDO, Brazil/GENEVA, 26 March 1998 (lwi) - In an important step
toward closer cooperation, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod-related
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB), and the Evangelical Church of
the Lutheran Confession in Brazil (IECLB) will hold a national Lutheran
conference on the Church, Lutheranism and integration in today's Brazil,
Oct. 29- Nov. 1.

Key addresses at the conference, to be held in the state of Santa Catarina,
will be given by Dr. Gottfried Brakemeier, a former Lutheran World
Federation president and professor of theology, and by Dr. Nestor Beck of
the Lutheran University of Brazil.

A cooperation agreement between the two churches and guidelines for its
implementation will be discussed during the conference. Forty
representatives of each of the two churches will take part. Subjects such
as mission and evangelism, literature, theological education, social work
and confessional schools will be discussed, in greater detail, in working
groups.

The Latin American information service ALC describes the conference as "an
important step toward community between the two Brazilian Lutheran
churches."

The IECLB, an LWF member church, has about 1 million members, and the IELB
some 207,000 members.
