GENEVA, 16 April 1998 (lwi) - "Church renewal, related closely with sound
liturgical theology that does not preclude the cultural influences in which
the whole congregation lives," is the conclusion reached by Samuel Ho,
director of research for the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) China Study
Program, at a seminar on "Faith and practice in the Chinese churches" held
in Hong Kong last month in connection with the meeting of the China Study
Committee.

A report at the seminar provided information on how differences in
liturgical practice have been resolved in the post denominational situation
in China - through case studies from the Chinese churches in Hong Kong,
Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore. The findings and papers of the seminar,
which was organized by the LWF Department for Theology and Studies (DTS),
will be published as No. 4 in the LWF China Study series.

The LWF/DTS has been responsible for the China Study Program since 1994. A
three-year extension of the study was endorsed by the LWF Council last
year. The results of the first three-year phase made a significant
contribution to the LWF Assembly in Hong Kong in 1997, LWF/DTS director,
Viggo Mortensen, told Lutheran World Information.

Conclusions and reflections from consultations held so far are contained in
three previous books in the China Study series, available from the LWF/DTS:
An Overview of Contemporary Chinese Churches (in English and Chinese), The
Situation of Women in the Church in China (in English and Chinese), The
Role and Interpretation of the Bible in the Life of the Church in China
(English only).
