GENEVA, 16 April 1998 (lwi) - A new version of Martin Luther's Small
Catechism (1529), translated into Swahili for the second time, was
published last month. "Katekisimo Ndogo ya Dr. Martin Luther" is the first
publication in the series "Fahisi Bora ya Urithi wa Imani ya Kilutheri".
This new authentic version follows the original text in detail and also
contains the Reformer's famous preface. Produced through co-operation
between the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT), Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Kenya (ELCK) and sponsor of the project, Lutheran
Heritage Foundation MI, USA, a first print run will provide 30,000 copies
of which half are destined for Tanzania and Kenya.

The aim of the joint project is to translate and publish the Lutheran
Confessional books, the Book of Concord and other basic Lutheran
reformatory works, into Swahili. The Book of Concord is planned for
publication early next year. Work on the books is led by a joint Executive
Committee of the ELCT and ELCK with project director and editor-in-chief,
the Rev. Dr. Anssi Simojoki, ELCK, sent by the Lutheran Heritage
Foundation, USA and LSRY, Finland.

Swahili is spoken and understood by some 100 million people in East Africa:
Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Republic of Congo. More
information may be obtained from E-Mail address: asimojoki@maf.org
or: The Book of Concord/Swahili, P.O. Box 21531, Nairobi, Kenya
