Entertainers Add Glitz to Peacemaking Conference

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Continuing its tradition of mixing pleasure with business,
the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program has lined up a star-studded array of
entertainment for the 1998 Peacemaking Conference, July 15-19 in Los
Angeles.

Featured guests will be Jennifer Delora, who has appeared in more than
20 films as well as on television and on the Broadway stage, and Mike
Farrell, who played B.J. Honeycutt on the hit television program "M*A*S*H."

Other entertainment will be provided by Hispanic opera singers "The
Three Tenors," the Hanmi Presbytery Pastors Choir and - in line with the
conference's focus on human rights - a group of Hollywood performers in a
one-time musical revue, "Hollywood Entertains for Human Rights."

Delora, in addition to acting, is director of the Bridges Sign Choir,
an all-deaf children's sign language choir that has performed live
throughout southern California and on network television. She has also
served as a consultant, adviser and teacher for a number of motion pictures
and television shows. She has taught sign language to such performers as
JoBeth Williams, Ann-Margaret, Kris Kristofferson, Kellie Martin and Ellen
DeGeneres.

Farrell, one of Hollywood's most prominent social activists, will not
perform but will share his experience and involvement in human rights
issues.

He has also hosted numerous conservation and wildlife programs for the
Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and has appeared in many public service
announcements on behalf of the sanctuary movement, the ethical treatment of
animals, encouraging kids to stay in school, women's shelters, handgun
control, alcohol and drug prevention, and a host of other social issues.

Farrell is currently co-chair of Human Rights Watch in California,
president of Death Penalty Focus, a member of the advisory board of the
National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, a member of the board of
advisers of the Cult Awareness Network and a founding board member of Peace
Studies ATV, an inmate-developed alternatives-to-violence program at the
Augusta Correctional Center in Virginia.

After a trip to Bosnia and Somalia on behalf of the United Nations
(U.N.), Farrell was named Good Will Ambassador for the U.N. High
Commissioner for Refugees. He has also traveled to Cuba, Rwanda, Kenya,
Zaire, the Middle East, Mexico, El Salvador, Paraguay and Chile in support
of various relief, refugee and human rights groups.
