    1998-99 "HORIZONS" Bible Study Focuses on Jeremiah

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-The 1998-99 "HORIZONS" Bible study features eight scripture 
passages chosen as a representative sample of the prophet Jeremiah's 
thought. 
 
    The annual popular Bible study was written this year by the Rev. Alice 
Ogden Bellis and is titled "Resistance and Restoration: The Message of the 
Prophet Jeremiah." 
 
    The study book has been sent to all "HORIZONS" subscribers and is now 
available for purchase. 
 
    Bellis is associate professor of Old Testament language and literature 
at Howard University's School of Divinity in Washington, D.C.  Her doctoral 
dissertation is on Jeremiah. 
 
    Each of the nine lessons features a key idea, definitions, prayer, 
discussion questions and a photo that suggests a contemporary 
interpretation of some part of the lesson. Suggestions for leaders, written 
by Nancy Scott, a Christian educator, writer, and workshop and retreat 
leader who lives in California, follow each lesson. 
 
    Bellis' first book, "Helpmates, Harlots, and Heroes: Women's Stories in 
the Hebrew Bible," was published in 1994 by Westminster John Knox Press. In 
the fall of 1998, Pilgrim Press will publish her newest book, "Doing the 
Twist to `Amazing Grace.'" 
 
    "HORIZONS" is the magazine of Presbyterian Women.  The Bible study is 
designed for use in Presbyterian Women circles, adult study groups and 
church-school classes. It can also be used for individual study and 
reflection. 
 
    "Resistance and Restoration: The Message of the Prophet Jeremiah" costs 
$4.  It is also available in a large-print edition for the visually 
impaired for $12.  Korean and Spanish translations, also at $4, will be 
available this summer, as will audiocassettes ($8) and a free Braille 
version.
