UPPSALA, Sweden/GENEVA, 30 April 1998 (lwi) - A proposed new church
ordinance which will replace the church code and other state regulations
governing the Church of Sweden was published March 5. The new ordinance
will come into effect Jan. 1, 2000, when the relationship between church
and state will change.

The ordinance proposal is the result of two years of preparatory work. Its
five constituent parts are:

1. Confession, order of services, general synod
2. Working structures at various ecclesiastical levels
3. Elections, parish boundaries, church registers, archives
4. Finance and property
5. Staff, structures of authority and complaint proceedings

Reports and proposals on the above will now be forwarded for a round of
debate to almost 3,400 recipients for a response requested by Oct. 1. The
general synod will consider a final proposal for the church ordinance in
June 1999.
