    "News Briefs" And "Presbyterian Life & Times" Lead 
    Presbyterian Winners In ACP Awards Competition

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C.-"NEWS BRIEFS," the Presbyterian News Service weekly, 
and "Presbyterian Life & Times," the monthly newsletter of the Synod of 
Lakes and Prairies, won top honors from the Associated Church Press (ACP) 
as the best publications in North America in their class. 
 
    In an April 21 awards ceremony here during the ACP annual convention, 
"NEWS BRIEFS" was named Best in Class as the best religious news service 
publication in the United States and Canada.  "Presbyterian Life & Times" 
was honored with the Best in Class award as the best newsletter. 
 
    Other Presbyterian winners included "Presbyterians Today," "Church & 
Society" and "HORIZONS." 
 
    ACP, which encompasses more than 200 religious publications, presented 
awards in 39 categories of religious journalism.  More than 1,000 entries 
were submitted in the various categories. 
 
    "Presbyterians Today," edited by Eva Stimson, led Presbyterian 
publications with six awards, including second place in the Best in Class 
competition for denominational general interest magazines.  "Presbyterians 
Today" won the Best in Class award in that category last year. 
 
    The magazine also won two Awards of Excellence (first place) - in the 
"Most Personally Useful Article" category for Richard Thompson's article, 
"Learning to Read What You Watch," in the January/February 1997 issue, and 
in the "Magazine Graphics: Spread or Story" category for "Murder Most Foul" 
in the October 1997 issue. 
 
    Its other three awards were an Award of Merit (second place) in the 
"Letters to the Editor" category (edited by managing editor Catherine 
Cottingham) for the September 1997 issue, an Honorable Mention (third 
place) in the "Department" category for "Spotlight" (edited by Stimson), 
and an Honorable Mention in the "Magazine Graphics: Entire Issue" category 
for the October 1997 issue.  Linda Crittenden is the magazine's designer 
and art director. 
 
    In addition to its Best in Class award, "Presbyterian Life & Times" won 
an Award of Excellence in the "Feature Article: News Service or Newsletter" 
category for editor Linda Post-Bushkofsky's article, "Mending Fences, 
Healing Hearts," in the July 1997 issue. 
 
    In addition to its Best in Class award, the Presbyterian News Service 
(coordinated by the Rev. Jerry Van Marter) won an Honorable Mention in the 
"News Story" category for Alexa Smith's article, "Bloodbath in Colombia 
Threatens Presbyterian Workers," in the June 20, 1997, issue of "NEWS 
BRIEFS." 
 
    "Church & Society" magazine, edited by the Rev. Kathy Lancaster, won an 
Award of Excellence in the "Mission Statement" category for best fulfilling 
its mission statement. 
 
    "HORIZONS" magazine, edited by Marie Cross, won an Award of Excellence 
for the best Bible study - Janice Catron's "Job: Faith Remains When 
Understanding Fails."
