between India, Pakistan

GENEVA, 14 May 1998 (lwi) - The general secretary of the Lutheran World
Federation (LWF), Ishmael Noko, has warned the heads of government of India
and Pakistan against a worsening of relations between the two neighboring
countries.

In a May 13 letter directed as much to the state president of India, K. R.
Narayanan, as to the state president of Pakistan, Muhammad Farooq Leghari,
Noko condemns India's resumption of nuclear weapons testing and Pakistan's
previous testing of a ballistic missile. "These actions do nothing to
improve the regional security situation," Noko stressed.

On May 11, despite international warnings, India carried out three
subterraneous nuclear tests in the Rajastan desert of western India.

The Pakistani government has said that the Indian government is obliging
Pakistan to enter into an arms race. Pakistan was first to test the
ballistic missile in April.
