Major Gift to Bring Distinguished Speakers to Montreat

    by Emily E. Odom

MONTREAT, N.C.-A substantial gift from the Daniel J. Stowe Foundation has
been
received by the Montreat Conference Center to establish the Daniel J. and
Alene Stowe Lecture Fund.

The fund will enable Montreat Conference Center to secure distinguished
speakers from within the ranks of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to
enhance Montreat's educational ministry and mission.

Dan and Alene Stowe, residents of Belmont, N.C., have long sought to
attract and to preserve a wealth of resources for Dan's native North
Carolina. The financial successes of the Stowe family, whose ancestry
traces back many generations in the Tarheel State, were achieved in the
textile business.

The Stowes' ties to Montreat were natural, since they are lifelong
Presbyterians and members of First Presbyterian Church, Belmont.

"A critical part of Montreat Conference Center's mission is to engage
and challenge those who attend conferences, worship and retreat programs
here," said R. James Henderson, interim
executive director of Montreat. "This objective is best accomplished by
offering our guests an opportunity to be exposed to the very best the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has to offer. There is no telling how many
thousands of lives and spirits will be touched thanks to the Stowes'
remarkable legacy to this institution."
