Sue Whitford, Longtime Presbyterian Executive, Dies

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.-Suzanne Park Whitford, who served the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) with distinction for many years as an executive, stated clerk and
member of national staff, died suddenly June 7 of a massive heart attack.

She was en route from her longtime home in West Lafayette, Ind., after
a memorial service for her mother, to a place in Missouri where she was to
scatter her mother's ashes when she was stricken. Her husband, Bob, and
two of her seven children were with her when she died.

Whitford, a native of Chicago, graduated from Purdue University in
1953. She was ordained as a deacon in 1959 and as an elder in 1962.
During her career she served as an executive for Boston Presbytery and
Wabash Valley Presbytery, and most recently as interim executive for Alaska
Presbytery, serving those presbyteries as stated clerk as well. She also
served in the Office of the General Assembly as staff to the General
Assembly Nominating Committee and to the moderator of the General Assembly.

Sue Whitford was one of the all-time greats.

She is survived by her husband, Robert K. Whitford, seven children and
several grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are pending.
