Proposed Resources Will Ease Presbyterian-Roman Catholic Relations

    by Nancy Rodman

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--A recommendation mandating the development of
denominational resources addressing pastoral issues of Presbyterians and
Roman Catholics in local congregations will go to the General Assembly from
the Assembly Committee on Catholicity and Ecumenical Relations.
Overture Advocate John Scotland addressed the need for pastoral
resources to help the people struggling with issues arising from marriages
between Presbyterians and Roman Catholics, Roman Catholics joining
Presbyterian churches, and the need for youth to understand the diversity
in their schools and communities.
While there are resources on doctrine, few address such questions as
how to help former Roman Catholics understand Presbyterianism while still
upholding their former tradition. Eugene Turner, Director of the
Department of Governing Body, Ecumenical and Agency Relations, said that
there are ongoing discussions with the Roman Catholic Church and that such
resources would further the process.
The Office on Theology and Worship is prepared to develop these
resources. The expected financial implication is $3,000.
