Assembly to Deal with Peacemaking-Related Matters
    by Nancy Rodman

CHARLOTTE--Recommendations before the General Assembly from the Assembly
Committee on Peacemaking, International Service and Concerns include the
Year with Latin America, imprisoned Puerto Ricans, the International Year
with Older Persons, the Volunteers in Shared Ministry Team, the 50th
anniversary of One Great Hour of Sharing, and military related investments.
If the recommendations are approved, the General Assembly will:
Continue to provide resources and information and to encourage
Presbyterians to go to places in Latin America where brothers and sisters
are in crisis, providing ministries of accompaniment.
Express its concern for the situation of fifteen Puerto Ricans who have
been serving extended sentences for criminal actions committed in the 1980s
and direct the stated clerk to request the Attorney General of the United
States to review the sentences and seek clemency if that is found to be
appropriate.
Commend the United Nations for declaring 1999 the International Year of
Older Persons and encourage recognition and celebration of the Year
throughout the denomination.
Continue the Volunteers in Shared Ministry Team as a Working Group so
that the Team's coordinating and planning functions can be continued.
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the One Great Hour of Sharing by
giving thanks for 50 years of faithful witness and commemorating the
anniversary throughout the year and during the 211th General Assembly.
Affirm that it will be the policy of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
not to invest in the securities of publicly traded corporations engaged in
military-related production. Dialogue between middle governing bodies and
such corporations located within their bounds will be encouraged and a
one-year waiting period will be observed prior to divestment. Middle
governing bodies, institutions, and members of the PCUSA will be urged to
implement this policy in the management of their portfolios.
