         Partners in Mission Awards Given at Group Dinner

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--Ever pressed for time, the General Assembly Council this 
year decided to hold its annual awards  ceremony, which  previously took 
place during an Assembly plenary, during the  commissioners'  group dinner 
on Thursday evening. In the order of presentation, awards, presenters and 
recipients are as follows: 
     Washington Office Awards, presented by Elenora Giddings-Ivory, 
director  to Eva Clayton, 
 North Carolina's first African American congresswoman and representative 
of the first congressional district, and  to New Covenant presbytery for 
holding an annual Washington Office Seminar week in D.C. for the past five 
years. 
     The Commitment to Peacemaking Award,   given for the past 15 years to 
more than  4600 congregations and 62 presbyteries adopting the commitment, 
presented by Nile Harper, moderator of Committee on Peacemaking, 
International Service and Concern  to the Presbytery of Pueblo, Synod of 
the Rocky Mountains 
     Higher Education Awards & Honor Roll,  presented by Rev. Duncan 
Ferguson, associate director for higher education,  NMD, and Dr. Harry 
Smith, president emeritus, Austin College, to Clyde O. Robinson, Jr. North 
Carolina native, former campus pastor at Duke University, and former 
associate for Higher Education Ministries & Students' Ministries, NMD, 
until his retirement in October, 1997.  
   The Honor Roll includes Dr. James Daughdrill, Jr. president of Rhodes 
College;  The Rev. Henry Fawcett, director of the Native American program 
and pastor to students at the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary; 
Dr. Verle Headings, professor of Pediatrics & Human Genetics, Howard 
University;  Mary Ann Meyer, coordinator for the Cooperative Campus 
Ministry of Central New York, and Rev. Robert Russell, pastor emeritus, 
Northminster Presbyterian Church,  Columbus, Ohio. 
     Commitment to Evangelism Awards,  presented by Revs. Rosalie Potter 
and Douglas Wilson,  associates, Evangelism & Church Development, NMD, to 
the Presbyteries of Cherokee and Western Colorado. 
     Excellence in Theological Education Award,  presented by John Mulder, 
president of Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary,  to Dr. C. Ellis 
Nelson,   research professor of Christian Education, Austin Presbyterian 
Theological Seminary, retired and now serving as interim president. Dr. 
Nelson has also  taught at New York's Union, Louisville, San Francisco, and 
Dubuque seminaries and the University of Melbourne and is the architect of 
Presbyterian theological education since 1983. 
     Sam and Helen R. Walton Fund Awards,    presented by Ben McAnally and 
Mrs. Helen Walton to these congregations, bringing to 40 the new church 
developments receiving the annual $30,000 awards since first given in 1992: 
   * The Church of the Hills, PCUSA, Duluth, Ga. 
   * Korean Presbyterian Church of Pinellas County, St. Petersburg, Fla. 
   * Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church, Oak Ridge, N.C. 
   * Iglesia Presbiteriana Sion, San Sebastian, Puerto Rico 
   * New Life Presbyterian Church, Milwaukee, Wis. 
   * North Lakeland Presbyterian Church, Lakeland, Fla. 
   * Santa Fe New Church Development,  Edmond, Okla. 
   * South Bay Presbyterian Church, Torrance, Calif. 
     Mission Support Awards, given by Rev. Claude Godwin, associate 
director of Mission Funding, to the following presbyteries: 
Presbytery of Pittsburgh, largest Presbyterian Women's Presbytery 
Contribution, $167,836.99; Presbytery of Eastern Oregon, largest 
Presbyterian Women's per member contribution: $5.54; Presbytery of National 
Capital, largest  special offering contribution:  $402,213.71; Presbytery 
of Alaska, largest  special offering per member contribution: $15.54; 
Presbytery of Coastal Carolina, largest  contribution for other appeals: 
$274,059,34; Presbytery of Midwest Hanmi, largest per member contribution 
for other appeals: $14.01; Presbytery of Donegal, largest contribution in 
basic mission support: $522,009.59; Presbytery of Alaska, largest per 
member contribution in basic mission support: $23.13; Presbytery of 
Philadelphia, largest contribution in total G.A. Mission Support: 
$1,126,959.88; and  Presbytery of Alaska: largest per member contribution, 
total GA Mission Support: $43.35. 
   Restorative Justice Awards, presented by Sandra Hawley , NMD committee 
chair, to John A. Pickens, founder of the Georgia Justice Project, Atlanta, 
and Rev. Mable Rasmussen, chaplain for 15 years at Fairbanks Correctional 
Center, Alaska. 
   Ecumenical Service Awards, presented by Peter Pizor, WMD chair, to First 
Presbyterian Church, Urbana, Ill.  for establishing sister church 
relationships with two local ethnic minority congregations and also one in 
Domasi, Malwi; to Christ Presbyterian Church, Crown Point, Ind.,  for 
establishing an interdenominational model with Methodist, Lutheran and 
Roman Catholic congregations joining regularly for Bible study, mission 
service, and worship  and  to the  Synod of the Trinity for creative 
partnerships in several overseas countries.  
     PHEWA Ministry Awards, presented by Dr. Lois Rifner,  vice president, 
Presbyterian Health, Education & Welfare Association, NMD, as follows: 
   Comano Award to Immanuel Presbyterian Church, McLean, Va. and Garden 
Memorial Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C.;  David Hancock Award to 
David Zuverink, Associate, Office of Health Ministries, NMD;  Margaret Fuad 
Award to Presbyterian Church of Dansville, Dansville, N.Y.;  UPPA Award to 
Presbyterian Church of the Cross, Greensboro, N.C. 
     Finally, the following new Presbyterian Church charters (1997) were
