First Hawaiian Minister Attends General Assembly

                        By Emett Barfield

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-- The Rev. Dan Chun, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of
Honolulu, Hawaii is the first minister commissioner to attend the General
Assembly from Hawaii and the Presbytery of the Pacific. Elected from the
floor on the first ballot, Chun was excited and challenged by the
opportunity for Assembly participation.
In addition to working in his presbytery, Chun also serves as vice
moderator of the Hawaii Presbyterian Council. The council is composed of
three and one half churches (one being a union church with Christian Church
Disciple of Christ denomination).
A fourth generation Hawaiian, it is appropriate that Chun receive the
distinction of being the first Hawaiian minister commissioner. His
grandfather was working in the Lolani Palace when the American military
ended the reign of Queen Liliuokalani and the monarchy in Hawaii.
A Fuller Seminary graduate, Chun, a multi-talented minister, has a broad
background of experience. He came to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) from
the United Church Christ after a career as newscaster for the CBS affiliate
in Honolulu.
When asked about his reaction to his experience at the Assembly, his
reply, "Awesome. The amount of reading, the discussion, the deliberation,
the discernment of the commissioners is awesome." He is thoroughly enjoying
this opportunity to work in the greater church.
Pointing to the fact that the General Assembly has never met in the 50th
state, he offers this suggestion: "The Honolulu Convention Center will be
open in time for General Assembly to meet in Honolulu in 2005, and I would
encourage the committee to give serious consideration to our invitation."
In addition, he says that the Presbytery of the Pacific met in Honolulu
in March. This meeting was not only well attended, but was pronounced by
the majority attending, to be the best presbytery meeting to date.
