Richard C. Killmer, who in May was suspended from the Presbyterian
ministry for a minimum of one year by New Brunswick Presbytery (see "NEWS
BRIEFS," May 29, #98180), has been placed on administrative leave for three
months by the National Council of Churches (NCC), his current employer.
According to a June 29 memo from the NCC, Killmer confessed to past
sexual misconduct last August and was placed on probation at that time. In
May, he pleaded guilty in New Brunswick Presbytery to a single charge of
sexual misconduct that occurred in 1993, while he was on the national staff
of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
The NCC said there has "been no evidence of any inappropriate behavior"
since Killmer joined its staff in 1996. The memo stated that Killmer's
three-month suspension was "due to increased concern" in the wake of New
Brunswick Presbytery's one-year suspension.
