NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The first recipients of a scholarship that
recognizes a husband and wife's contribution to the United Methodist Men
organization has been announced by the church's Office of Loans and
Scholarships.

Robert Spencer Anderson, a member of Clark Memorial United Methodist
Church in Nashville, and Elizabeth Karol Walker, a member of Bethany
United Methodist Church in New Orleans, are the first two recipients of
the Helen and Allen Brown Scholarship Awards. Each will receive $600.

The scholarships were established in 1994 by Clark Church in conjunction
with the United Methodist Men in recognition of the Browns' service to
the organization and to the United Methodist Church.

Allen Brown retired as a director in the Methodist Men's Division of the
United Methodist Board of Discipleship in 1994. He had been on staff
since 1978 and produced numerous resources for United Methodist Men's
presidents and he implemented the national "Black Men in Crisis" events
for the division. Previously he owned and operated an insurance and real
estate business in New Orleans. 

A scholarship will be awarded annually to a college student in the
Nashville District of the Tennessee Annual Conference and a college
student in the New Orleans District of the Louisiana Annual Conference,
according to Angella Current, staff executive in the church's Office of
Loans and Scholarships.

Anderson plans to  major in business this fall at United
Methodist-related Clark Atlanta University, and Walker plans to major in
psychology at Hampton (Va.) Institute.

"I am very excited that this scholarship will help young people pursue
their dreams in the way Allen and Helen Brown helped hundreds pursue
their dreams through their ministry," said the Rev. Joseph Harris, top
staff executive of the Commission on United Methodist Men.
