United Methodist-related Duke University Divinity School, Durham, N.C.,
has received a $100,000 challenge gift from an anonymous donor to
establish a scholarship endowment fund honoring the Rev. William K.
Quick.

A 1958 graduate of the divinity school, Quick retired July 1 after 24
years as pastor of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Detroit. He
built up the church into a multicultural, multiracial congregation,
representing all socioeconomic backgrounds and 46 nationalities.

Money raised for the William Kellon Quick Scholarship Endowment Fund
will be used to provide financial aid for Duke Divinity School students
who are preparing for parish ministry in the United Methodist Church.
Gifts are being sought to match the $100,000.

A native of South Carolina, Quick grew up in Scotland County, N.C., and
served churches in North Carolina before going to Detroit in 1974. For
the past 20 years, Quick played a key role in keeping gambling out of
Detroit. He has chaired or co-chaired every major campaign against
casino ballot proposals. Only in November 1996 did a proposal pass that
legalized three casinos in the city. This year, Quick has led a
coalition of clergy intent on repealing the measure.

Active in the World Methodist Council for 30 years, Quick has been a
delegate to seven World Methodist Conferences, and has been elected a
delegate to six general and jurisdictional conferences of the church. A
frequent speaker on Detroit radio and television, he has appeared on
"The Protestant Hour" national radio series. He is the author of three
books.
