Youth at national African-American church event
to meet at Oberlin, visit underground railroad sites

EDITORS AND PRODUCERS: Some 150 African
American youth will gather for Harambee '98 July 13-
18 as part of the 15th biennial convention of United Black
Christians that is drawing some 300 United Church of
Christ members to the Cleveland area that week.  The
youth will meet primarily at Oberlin College.

Harambee '98 convenes at Oberlin on Monday, July 13,
at 9 a.m.  Workshops, panel discussions and worship
services are planned at various sites (see agenda
highlights below). 

In addition, Harambee '98 is sponsoring an African
American tour of Lorain County Underground Railroad
stations used during the Civil War to transport African
Americans to freedom.  The tour is set for Friday, July
17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

UBC is a national organization within the 1.4-million-
member United Church of Christ, which has its national
offices in downtown Cleveland.

information below).  Here are youth agenda highlights
(on Oberlin campus, unless otherwise noted):

* Keynote address, the Rev. Dr. F. Allison Phillips of
Cleveland: "Today's Youth   Tomorrow's Future." 
Tue., July 14, 10 a.m., Fairchild Chapel, followed by
panel discussion and workshops.

* College Fair, sponsored by the United Church of Christ
Commission for Racial Justice, featuring financial aid
and application workshops, college recruiter interviews
and more.  Wed., July 15, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

* Harambee convocation and worship.  Thurs., July 16,
5 p.m., UCC national offices, 700 Prospect Ave.,
Cleveland, 2nd floor.

* Karamu, a festival of African cultural arts, presented by
African and African American artists from the local
community and around the country.  Fri., July 17, 7 p.m.,
South Hall.
