EDITORS: The 15th Craigville Theological Colloquy
an annual conference on Cape Cod involving
pastors, theologians and lay members of the United
Church of Christ and other denominations is
tackling an ambitious agenda that goes to the heart
of controversies over inclusive language in
preaching and liturgy. The event runs July 13-17 at
a United Church of Christ conference center in
Craigville, Mass.
Daily Internet summaries of the papers and
discussions are posted on the UCC Web site's
"Theology Page" at <http://www.ucc.org/theology>.
Among the topics of presentations and small-group
discussions: What are the deep meanings of
traditional language and the faith? Can faith
language change when the culture changes? Does
the language of Scripture take precedence over
personal and collective experience?
Although related to the UCC, the Craigville
Theological Colloquy is broadly ecumenical. This
year it includes participants from the Episcopal
Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ), Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, Evangelical Covenant Church,
Unitarian Universalist Association and other
religious denominations.
For further information, contact Andy Lang of the
UCC Office of Communication. During the
colloquy, he can be reached through the Craigville
Conference Center, telephone 508-775-1265; fax
508-778-1160. After the colloquy, phone him in
Cleveland at 216-736-2215. Or phone the main
number of the UCC Office of Communication, 216-
736-2222.
