The Rev. Kenneth W. Locklear, a Lumbee Indian and pastor of Triad Native
American United Methodist Church, Greensboro, N.C., has been nominated
to head the Southeastern Jurisdictional Agency for Native American
Ministries (SEJANAM) of the United Methodist Church.

Locklear was unanimously nominated July 9 by the ministry's board of
directors to succeed retiring director Robert L. Mangum. The nomination
must be approved by the jurisdiction's administrative council in
November. If approved, he will begin his duties at Lake Junaluska, N.C.,
July 1, 1999.

SEJANAM was established in 1984 to create and strengthen Native American
ministries in the church's nine-state Southeastern Jurisdiction.

Currently president of the Native American International Caucus,
Locklear also is the chairman of both the Southeastern Regional Native
American Caucus and the Western North Carolina Conference Committee on
Native American Ministries. He is chairman of SEJANAM's communications
committee and holds membership on the churchwide Commission on Religion
and Race and the General Council on Council on Ministries.

Locklear and the Triad Native American United Methodist Church are
featured in a Native American Awareness Sunday promotional video "Living
the Dream." The church, with an average attendance of 100 people became
debt free in April when it dedicated its $300,000 facility.
