Seven volunteer with Youth Venture in Belfast, Northern Ireland

ELKHART, Ind. (GCMC/MBM) - Seven young people are participating with a
Youth
Venture group in Belfast, Northern Ireland, from July 15-August 2.

Volunteers include: Nate Andrew Carminito of Souderton, Pa.; Tina Marie
Furry of Harrisonburg, Va.; Ruth Rebecca Harder of Hillsboro, Kans.;
Kimberly S. Heckman of East Peoria, Ill.; Burke Landon Hummel of Berlin,
Ohio; Rachel Alice Molnar of Kitchener, Ont.; and Cordelia Elisabeth
Nance
of Granger, Ind.

Youth Venture is a joint program of Mennonite Board of Missions of the
Mennonite Church and the Commission on Home Ministries of the General
Conference Mennonite Church.

Volunteers spent their first few days in Northern Ireland getting
accustomed to Belfast and, in particular, to the location in the west of
the
city where they lived and worked. They assisted local staff and
volunteers in
a children's and youth Christian project called "Streetbeat." The work of

Streetbeat is centered in a low-income housing area and is staffed by
local
people who work with 5- to 20-year-olds.

Since Youth Venture was founded in 1985, more than 700 young adults
between
the ages of 14 and 20 have participated in assignments ranging from
construction, yard work and home repair to Bible-school, recreational and

community programs. Each assignment provides the volunteers with an
orientation to the local culture, a work project and interaction with
local
people. Volunteers may work at various project sites within the assigned
location.

Youth Venture offers both North American and international service
opportunities.  North American missions include Markham, Ont.; Montreal;
Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and Toronto. International locations include
Belfast,
Northern Ireland, and Bogota, Colombia.
