Three Ohio youth volunteer with Youth Venture in Toronto

ELKHART, Ind. (GCMC/MBM) - Three Ohio youth will participate Aug. 2-8
 with a Youth Venture group in Toronto.

Participants include Emily Ann Gingerich of Smithville, Ohio; Brianne
Kristen
Hummel of Berlin, Ohio; and Emily D. Sommers of Hartville, Ohio.

Youth Venture is a joint program of Mennonite Board of Missions of the
Mennonite Church and the Commission on Home Ministries of the General
 Conference Mennonite Church.

Toronto volunteers will be immersed in an urban experience with a strong
interactive learning component and opportunities to serve. Participants
will wrestle with passages of Scripture in the context of their
experience;
spend time in reflection, worship and discussion of their own
lifestyles;
 and consider what it takes to be involved in Christian service. The
experience
will include activities like street walks guided by former street kids
and
time in learning/service settings, such as soup kitchens, drop-ins, night

shelters, refugee centers, low income community housing programs,
seniors' homes and advocacy groups. Options for recreation time include
sampling Toronto's multicultural aspects, including ethnic cuisine and
 cultural events. Toronto is home to people of at least 100 languages
and cultures.

Since Youth Venture was founded in 1985, more than 700 young adults
 between the ages of 14 and 20 have participated in assignments ranging
from construction, yard work and home repair to Bible-school,
recreational
 and community programs. Each assignment provides the volunteers with an
orientation to the local culture, a work project and interaction with
local
people. Volunteers may work at various project sites within the assigned
 location.

Youth Venture offers both North American and international service
opportunities. North American missions include Markham, Ont.; Montreal;
Portland, Ore.; Seattle; and Toronto. International locations include
 Belfast, Northern Ireland, and Bogot , Colombia.
