ACNS LC013 - 18 July 1998

STATEMENT BY THE ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH, THE MOST REVEREND ROBIN EAMES

The Lambeth Conference starts today when bishops from across the
Anglican Communion will meet at Canterbury over the next three
weeks.

The Lambeth Conference is about relationships, relationships that
affect everyone here and every human being: communities. We will
be exploring the relationships between rich and poor, and our
relationship with people of other faiths, particularly with
Islam.

We will experience our relationships through meeting together as
leaders of the Anglican Communion and with other Christian
traditions so that we can show and advance God's love in the
world. The Lambeth Conference is about the total spectrum of
human relationships in community.

One of the four sections within which bishops will work is
dealing with what it means to be fully human. They will be
looking at human rights and the negation of human dignity,
international debt and economic justice, the environment, modern
technology, euthanasia, and human sexuality.

Note for the editors

Archbishop Robin Eames is chairman of the Episcopal Communicators
team at the conference. More than 730 bishops and 600 spouses
will attend. Ecumenical guests also will be present.
