United Methodist-related Greensboro (N.C.) College has raised more than
$119,000 to establish an endowed scholarship fund honoring United
Methodist Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald.

The scholarship fund was announced during a recent tribute dinner held
at the college, as Fitzgerald retired after serving 19 years on the
board of trustees for the United Methodist Foundation for Christian
Higher Education. Fitzgerald retired from active episcopacy in 1992 and
lives in Winston-Salem, N.C. His career in the denomination spans more
than 50 years and 15 churches. He has written 10 books and also is a
member of the board of trustees at Greensboro College.
The Bishop Ernest Fitzgerald Presidential Scholarship will be endowed at
$250,000. It is a full- tuition, merit-based scholarship and will have a
value of $62,000 for each recipient. "This was United Methodism at its
very best," said George Miller, president and chief executive officer of
the foundation. "We honored a great church leader for his strong support
of church-related higher education and endowed a scholarship for a
future United Methodist leader at Greensboro College."
