Highest rating in opinion poll

GENEVA/RIGA, Latvia, 30 July 1998 (lwi) - A recent opinion poll conducted
in Latvia, shows that the country's population places the greatest trust in
its churches. Latvians rank the churches highest at 64.7 percent followed
by radio broadcasting at 64.2 percent, reports the Latvian church newspaper
Svetdienas Rits. Television is trusted by 63.2 percent of the population,
but the press by only 45.5 percent, although it does rank fourth.

Customs and excise, privatization agencies, the law-courts and trade unions
were rated the least credible.

These findings are all the more interesting, reports Svetdienas Rits,
because only six percent of the population, and just 1.8 percent of
non-naturalized persons, belong to a church.
