ALMA, Mich.-Alma College president Allan J. Stone has announced the
appointment of Jerry L. Scoby of Mt. Pleasant as Alma's vice president for
finance and administration. The appointment is effective Sept. 8, 1998.
Scoby, Central Michigan University's assistant vice president for business
affairs since 1992, brings 22 years of business and financial experience at
CMU to his Alma position. As Alma's top financial officer, Scoby will have
supervisory responsibilities for human resources, business office, physical
plant and office services. He will also serve as a member of the executive
staff and will work with four trustee committees.

DANVILLE, Ky.-Centre College has received a gift of $3.25 million from the
estate of Clarence Jones, a Louisville native and a 1924 graduate of the
college. Centre will use part of the bequest to complete funding needs for
a recently opened visual arts center, which will be named in memory of
Jones. The bequest will also pay for substantial renovation of two student
improvement projects. Born in Louisville, Jones earned a bachelor's degree
from Centre, followed by a law degree from the University of Louisville. He
became highly successful as an investment banker and stockbroker in
Louisville, where he was president of the Bond Club. He died in 1982 and
left the bulk of his estate in a trust fund, stipulating a substantial gift
to the college.

SWANNANOA, N.C.-Warren Wilson College has matched in 1998 a $250,000
matching challenge grant by the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust of
Chapel Hill, designated to the college's permanent endowment. Gifts made to
Warren Wilson's permanent general endowment this year qualify for matching
the William R. Kenan Jr. Endowment Fund. The college has raised $284,508
for endowment in 1998. Trustees of the Kenan Trust also approved, upon
successful completion of the first matching grant, a second grant of
$250,000 for the coming year. The second grant is subject to the same
requirements as the first.
