The Rev. Carroll D. Jenkins, 63, who has been synod executive for the
Synod of the Mid-Atlantic since its creation in 1988, has announced his
retirement, effective Sept. 30.
Jenkins' retirement follows the resignation of the synod's two
full-time program associates, moves unrelated to his retirement.
The Synod of the Mid-Atlantic is the most populous synod in the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). It was formed by the merger of the former
synods of North Carolina, the Virginias and the Piedmont, of which Jenkins
was executive for seven years. He previously served on the staff of
Philadelphia Presbytery for 11 years.

The violent struggle over civil rights in 1964 Mississippi shows the
different ways God's will can be interpreted to fit individual beliefs. In
his book "God's Long Summer: Stories of Faith and Civil Rights," Charles
Marsh takes an in-depth look at what happens when those beliefs clash.
Marsh's work has earned him the 1998 Louisville Grawemeyer Award in
Religion, a $150,000 prize for ideas and creative works that promote
understanding of the relationship between human beings and the divine. The
award is presented jointly by Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary
and the University of Louisville.
Marsh is professor of theology and director of the Project on Theology
and Community at Loyola College in Baltimore.
