Chicago Area Lutheran and Presbyterian Men
Put Full Communion Agreement into Practice

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

CHICAGO-Representatives of Presbyterian Men and Lutheran Men in Mission in
the Chicago area were among the first to put the "full communion" agreement
between their denominations into practice when they held a joint meeting
here June 26-28.

Just 10 days earlier, the 210th General Assembly of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) certified the voting by presbyteries that ratified "The
Formula for Agreement," which produced "full communion" among the
Presbyterians, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the
Reformed Church in America and the United Church of Christ.

Approximately 60 men attended the gathering, where the theme was "Build
Up ... Prepare the Way."

Speakers included Roland Martinson, professor of pastoral care at
Luther Seminary; the Rev. Angel Suarez-Valera, pastor of El Buen Pastor
Presbyterian Church in Maricao, Puerto Rico; the Rev. Curtis Miller,
associate for men's ministry of the PC(USA); and Doug Haugen, director for
men's ministry of the ELCA.

In keeping with the spirit of "full communion," said Miller, the
highlight of the conference was the celebration of the sacrament of the
Lord's Supper. "Many men left the conference promising to seek new
relationships between the Lutheran and Presbyterian men in their
communities and looking forward to the next gathering of Lutheran and
Presbyterian men."
