Christmas Joy Offering Goal Set at $6 Million;
Resources Readied
by Jerry L. Van Marter
LOUISVILLE, Ky.-After topping $5.3 million in 1997 - a whopping 16.5
increase over 1996- the 1998 Christmas Joy Offering of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.) is shooting for $6 million.
The offering is divided between Presbyterian racial/ethnic schools and
colleges and special assistance programs of the denomination's Board of
Pensions.
The theme of the 1998 offering is "Bring Joy to Every Longing Heart."
Worship resources for the offering will be mailed to ministers,
educators and worship committees in August. Presbytery and synod offices
will receive the full packet of Christmas Joy Offering materials in August
and the packets will be mailed to all congregations in October.
According to offering officials, new features have been added to the
resource packet this year. They include a worship resource for
intergenerational use, special worship materials for children and a
Christmas ornament.
The packet also includes a booklet featuring Minutes for Mission and
samples of other materials: a coin box, a poster, a placemat, reproducible
art, bulletin covers, worship resources and an order form.
Speakers from the Board of Pensions and the racial/ethnic schools and
colleges office are available. Scheduling is being handled in Louisville
by Stevie Finn at (502) 569-5201. A video interpreting the Christmas Joy
Offering is obtainable by calling Presbyterian Distribution Service at
1-800-524-2612.
