    by Julian Shipp

NEW YORK-College students looking for a unique opportunity to learn about
the work of the United Nations and the international community will have
the opportunity to do so Jan. 4-21, 1999, during the Eighth Annual January
Term offered by the Presbyterian United Nations Office, titled "Global
Studies: The United Nations for a Better World."

Participants will learn about the work of the U.N. in such areas as
peacekeeping and collective security, human rights, the situation of women
and children globally, economics, development and the role of the religious
community and nongovernmental organizations at the United Nations.

These issues will be explored through videos, presentations and
dialogue with speakers and small group discussions. Conversations will take
place with a diverse group of U.N. staff persons, delegates from member
states' missions and representatives from U.N. nongovernmental
organizations. There will also be time to explore New York City, its
museums, galleries, cafes, shops and ethnic neighborhoods.

Dr. William Felice, assistant professor of political science at Eckerd
College in St. Petersburg, Florida, will provide academic guidance for the
program. Students can earn college credit for this study. Credit will be
provided by Eckerd College, a liberal arts college and member of the
Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities.

Applications for the program must be received by Oct. 16, 1998.
Applications received after this date will be evaluated only if space
remains available, and a $50 fee will be assessed on late registrants. The
cost of the program is $950. This fee includes lodging throughout the
program, all breakfasts, one lunch, three dinners, all academic materials,
briefings and activities, and some evening activities. For those who wish
to commute, the program fee is $450. An additional tuition of $500 applies
to those students requiring academic credit for the course.

For more information and an application, write the Presbyterian United
Nations Office, 777 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY 10017. The
Presbyterian United Nations Office is part of the Presbyterian Peacemaking
Program, Congregational Ministries Division, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),
and is funded by the annual Peacemaking Offering.
