NCC TO HOLD MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR VICTIMS OF EMBASSY
BOMBINGS AUGUST 20, 12 NOON AT NEW YORK CITY
INTERCHURCH CENTER

WHAT:
A memorial service for all the victims of the Embassy bombings in Kenya
and Tanzania, sponsored by the National Council of Churches (NCC)
Africa Office.

WHEN:
Thursday, August 20 at 12 noon

WHY:
"This service is for all the victims of the bombings, North American,
Kenyan, Tanzanian, and all others," said Mr. Willis Logan, Director of the
NCC's Africa Office. "Unfortunately, it often takes tragedies like this to
remind us of how connected we are."

"The NCC has formal connections in Kenya and Tanzania through
Church World Service," Mr. Logan explained. CWS is the humanitarian
relief, refugee assistance and disaster response ministry of the NCC. "The
National Christian Council of Kenya (NCCK), whose Church House
headquarters are across the street from the embassy and where one person
died and at least 20 other people were injured, is a longtime partner of
ours. The Christian Council of Tanzania is also a CWS partner."

Through the Emergency Response Office of CWS, the NCC is developing
its own response to the bombings, Mr. Logan said.

WHO:
Participants in the service will include: Kermit DeGraffenreidt, Secretary
Treasurer of the Department of Overseas Missions for the African
Methodist Episcopal Zion Church; Eileen King, Executive Director,
