MYRNA SHEIE NAMED EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO ELCA BISHOP
98-30-177-AH

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Myrna J. Sheie, 52, Anoka, Minn., has been named
executive assistant to Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America effective Oct 1.
"Myrna Sheie will bring a depth of experience and numerous gifts to
this position," Anderson said. "I am confident that she will serve this
office and the church well in the years to come."
Sheie has served as assistant to the bishop of the ELCA's Saint Paul
(Minn.) Area Synod since 1988. Prior to the formation of the ELCA Sheie
worked in the Division for Life and Mission in the Congregation of the
former American Lutheran Church, specializing in communications and youth
education resources.
Sheie was a final candidate for ELCA vice president at the 1997 ELCA
Churchwide Assembly.
She graduated summa cum laude in English and education from Augsburg
College, Minneapolis, in 1968. She has undertaken graduate studies at St.
Thomas University, St. Paul.
As one of three assistants to the bishop, Sheie's new
responsibilities will include developing agendas for the ELCA's Church
Council meetings and churchwide assemblies. She will provide leadership in
churchwide planning and budgeting processes and serve as a liaison for the
bishop with synods of the ELCA.
Sheie succeeds Lita Brusick Johnson, who is now director for the
ELCA's World Hunger and Disaster Appeals.
Sheie is married to Stephen Carl Sheie; they are the parents of two
adult sons.
