    1998 Election Packet Available

The 1998 Presbyterian Election Packet, "Christian and Citizen," is now
available. It is designed for congregational study and action.

The highlight of the packet is a three-part booklet for study of the
issue of welfare reform. It includes a theological essay, "The Hebrew
Bible Has a Word for `Welfare'" by Richard Weis of New Brunswick
Theological Seminary.

"Christian and Citizen" also includes a section on current issues that
outlines Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly policy on such
issues as the arms race, taxes, reproductive choice, public education,
health care and crime. It is accompanied by a study guide for adult
education classes that also addresses Presbyterian and Reformed
understandings of what is meant by "good government."

The full packet also contains a poster, bulletin inserts, worship
resources, voter registration information, examples of Presbyterians making
a difference in public policy advocacy, suggestions for running for public
office, guidelines for Presbyterians during times of disagreement that were
developed by the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program, how to write an opinion
letter to newspaper editors and a list of additional resources.

The packet can be ordered from Presbyterian Distribution Service at
1-800-524-2612 and asking for PDS #74-360-98-315.
