    Notes about People

    The Rev. William A. Stewart Jr., former executive presbyter of Memphis 
Presbytery, has been called as interim executive of the Synod of the 
Mid-Atlantic. Stewart, who takes office Oct. 19, succeeds the Rev. Carroll 
D. Jenkins, who retired at the end of September after serving the synod for 
10 years. 
    Honorably retired, Stewart has served pastorates in North Carolina, 
Virginia and Wyoming. He was also general presbyter of the former Orange 
Presbytery (N.C.) and served as chaplain in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 
which he retired with the rank of rear admiral.

    The Presbytery of Transylvania has elected the Rev. Cheryl Ann Elfond 
to be executive presbyter, effective October 26, 1998. 
    Elfond comes to Transylvania from Hastings, Neb., where she is 
associate pastor of First Presbyterian Church. She brings experience in 
Committee on Ministry work, spirituality, pastoral care, 
nurture and mission. 
    She succeeds the Rev. William G. McAtee, who retired last year.  The 
Rev. Marcia Clark Myers has been serving as interim executive presbyter.
