The Evangelical Alliance UK, representing the collective voice
of more than one million evangelical Christians in 30

life director. He will replace John Earwicker who leaves at the
end of this year to become senior minister at Purley Baptist
Church in Surrey.

John Smith will take up the appointment in January 1999 and will

Church Life Team, which encompasses prayer, evangelism, social
responsibility and supporting the 28 denominations and 3000 local
churches in membership of the Alliance.

the Scottish and UK councils and executives in recent years. Rev
Joel Edwards, the general director of the Alliance, said: "We
welcome John to the staff of the Alliance. His experience as a
local pastor will be invaluable. He will make a significant
contribution in helping shape the Alliance as we serve the
evangelical Church in the 21st Century."

where John Smith has been minister since 1985, were told of his
forthcoming move during their normal Sunday services this
morning. He will continue to lead the church until Christmas.

John, who originally comes from Liverpool, is married to Margaret
and has two children: Gordon, aged 23, and Kirsty, aged 21.
