A collection of biblical passages intended to bring comfort and hope to
people in abusive relationships is available from the American Bible
Society.

The Lord Hears Your Cries, in the Contemporary English Version,
addresses the emotions that occur during domestic violence. Passages
from both the Old and New Testaments are included, grouped in seven
chapters by the emotions that victims of domestic violence may
experience: shock and disbelief; guilt and pain; isolation and fear;
anger and resentment; depression and low self-esteem; the need to
rebuild one's life; and acceptance and peace.

Questions throughout the booklet encourage readers to reflect on the
passages and to sort through their feelings. A guide is included with
suggestions for using the booklet and for ministering to abuse victims.

"In developing this Scripture portion, our main concern was to provide
those going through the trauma of domestic abuse with support from the
Scriptures that would guide them to seek life-giving solutions," said
Barbara Bernstengel, product development director for the
non-denominational, non-profit organization.

The Lord Hears Your Cries was reviewed by a panel that included clergy,
counselors and social workers, as well as people who have experienced
domestic violence. The Society suggests the booklet be shared with
domestic violence support groups, shelters for the abused, churches,
hospitals and health care institutions, and correctional facilities. The
publication provides information to create the basis for discussion
groups, sermons and one-on-one counseling.

Individuals can receive a free copy by calling 1-800-322-4253. Churches,
