United Church of Christ meeting to spotlight work of Argentinian
grandmothers to find "disappeared" children during dictatorship

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The grandmother responsible for
searching for more than 200 "disappeared" children in Argentina
when it was a military dictatorship will be the keynote speaker at
the 189th annual meeting of the United Church Board for World
Ministries in Hartford, Conn., Nov. 12-17.
Estella B. de Carlotto is president of "Grandmothers of
Plaza de Mayo," an Argentine-based organization of women who
lost children in the 1970s when the country was under military rule.
Many were the children of parents taken into custody by the
police because of their liberal viewpoints during a rightist period.
Some children were born in detention centers.
To date, 56 children have been found. Some of those
found have been returned to their natural families, while others
have remained with their adoptive families. A number of cases in
which the identities of the children are disputed are still before
Argentine courts.
De Carlotto will speak at a public meeting Thursday, Nov.
12, at 7:30 p.m. at Hastings International Conference Center, 85
Sigourney Street in Hartford.
The UCC's Board for World Ministries and its
predecessor bodies comprise the
United States' oldest overseas missions agency and is charged
with carrying on the worldwide work of the UCC. The World
Board has more than 230 missionaries serving in 30 countries.
Today, the work is carried on through joint cooperation with the
Division of Overseas Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) through a Common Global Ministry Board.
The United Church of Christ is the largest Protestant
denomination in Connecticut, with 261 local churches in its
regional Connecticut Conference. The oldest church, First Church
in Windsor, Conn., opened its doors in 1630.
