LWF mourns inspiring journalist and pioneer of communication technology

GENEVA, 7 December 1998 (lwi) - American journalist and former editor of
the Lutheran World Information, Roger Kahle, died on December 1 in
Chicago, USA, from heart failure.

A graduate in communication sciences, Kahle was also an ordained
theologian. From 1979 to 1987 he was editor of the English version of the
Lutheran World Information. Subsequently and until his death, he worked as
managing editor of The Lutheran, the magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America (ELCA) and was president of the church news agency,
Associated Church Press.

His colleagues appreciated his profound and thorough gift of observation
as well as his computer and technological skills. "He was a major
contributor to the strong journalistic tradition of the magazine," said a
representative of the ELCA. He always maintained lively contact with the
Lutheran World Federation (LWF). He was the author of numerous scholarly
publications, award-winning radio and television programs, documentaries,
articles in journals and magazines and public relation campaigns. He was
married with three children.

Kahle's last meeting with the LWF staff was at the LWF Ninth Assembly in
Hong Kong and in the summer of this year during the Council meeting. With
fond memories, they remember him as a "real" journalist, who was able to
inspire colleagues, a bridge builder to the member churches and a pioneer
of the information age, as he introduced modern communication technology
into the then Communication Department of the LWF, notes a communique from
the LWF.
