    Notes About People

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

A book co-authored by Auburn Theological Seminary president Barbara
Wheeler about the importance of institutional culture in theological
education has won top honors from leading social scientists who study
religion.
"Being There: Culture and Formation in Two Theological Schools" was
honored by the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion during its
recent annual meeting. Wheeler co-wrote the book with Jackson Carroll, a
professor of religion and society at Duke University; Daniel Aleshire,
executive director of the Association of Theological Schools; and Penny
Long Marler, associate professor of religion at Samford University.
The title of the book reflects the authors' conclusion that "being
there" - students' immersion in the life and culture of the school - is an
important ingredient of the educational process, and a much more powerful
force in a student's education than many seminary educators realize.

If elected next October, a New York City-area construction engineer
will be the first Hispanic member to lead the Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) General Assembly.
Paul D. Rivera, of Valley Stream, N.Y., is the nominee for moderator of
the Indianapolis-based denomination. He was recommended during the
Disciples' General Nominating Committee meeting earlier this month.
