Religious Communicators' Group Gets $200,000 Lilly Grant

    by Jerry L. Van Marter

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Lilly Endowment has awarded $200,000 to the Religious
Communications Congress (RCC) to help underwrite its conference in the year
2000.

The once-in-a-decade congress, started in 1970, will be held in Chicago
March 29-April 1, 2000. The theme is "Faith Stories in a Changing World,"
and the conference will focus on sharing faith stories of five types:
spoken, electronic, cyberspace, written and artistic.

"This grant allows our planning team to invite presenters from around
the world, and increases our ability to include state-of-the-art
communication technology along with oral and print tradition," said Shirley
Whipple Struchen, a United Methodist media producer and chair of RCC 2000.
Ann Gillies, coordinator for media services for the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) Office of Communication in Louisville, is program chair for the
congress.

Presenters lined up so far include John White, Pulitzer Prize-winning
photojournalist from the "Chicago Sun-Times," and Pradip Thomas, director
of studies and publications for the World Association for Christian
Communication in London.

The opening banquet program will feature a specially-created video,
"Images of Faith," produced by a consortium of Canadian communicators. The
three-part montage will highlight the passion and commitment that have
driven people of faith to communicate their beliefs through art, music and
the printed and the spoken word.

RCC 2000 is a forum for religious communicators that is international
and multi-faith. It is being planned and hosted by North American faith
groups interested in global communication.
